Zakatul Fitra
Purifying the Fast, Nourishing the Ummah
A sacred tradition to purify our fasting and bring joy to those in need. Join us in fulfilling this beautiful Sunnah, ensuring every family can celebrate Eid with dignity.
What is Zakatul Fitra?
Zakat al-Fitr is a sacred duty and a beautiful tradition observed by every Muslim who has the means, at the end of Ramadan. Unlike the annual Zakat on wealth, this is offered per person in the household. It serves a dual purpose: to purify the fasting person from any shortcomings during the month, and to ensure that our brothers and sisters in need have sufficient food to celebrate the joyous occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr with dignity.
The Prophetic Hadith
Sunan Abu Dawood 1609
“The Prophet ﷺ enjoined Zakat-ul-Fitr as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenities, and as food for the needy.”
How It Works
A transparent and respectful journey of giving
Count Your Blessings
Specify the number of people in your household — Fitra is due for every member, including children.
Honor the Sunnah
Pick the grain type — rice, wheat flour, barley, or dates — based on local staple and current market rates.
Delivered with Dignity
Volunteers respectfully hand-deliver the food to deserving families before the Eid prayer — ensuring trust and dignity.
Guidance on Fitra
It is offered before the Eid prayer. The preferred time is after Fajr on the day of Eid, but it can comfortably be given one or two days prior to ensure timely distribution.
Every Muslim who has food in excess of their needs for the day of Eid observes this beautiful obligation on behalf of themselves and their dependents, ensuring everyone shares in the joy of Eid.
We follow the established Sunnah of offering staple foods. While offering monetary equivalents is accepted by some scholars, we purchase and distribute high-quality food to honor the prophetic tradition.
One Saa' is approximately 2.5 to 3 kg depending on the grain. We use a generous 2.5 kg standard for our calculations to ensure the Sunnah is fulfilled completely.
We partner closely with local masjids and community organizations in Kolkata. The food is purchased in bulk and delivered with dignity directly to deserving families before the Eid prayer.
Share the Joy of Eid
Embrace the spirit of Ramadan by sharing your blessings. By offering your Fitra, you help bring peace, dignity, and a beautiful Eid to families across our community.
